Urbanization affects oak–pathogen interactions across spatial scales

چکیده

The world is rapidly urbanizing, thereby transforming natural landscapes and changing the abundance distribution of organisms. However, insights into effects urbanization on species interactions, plant–pathogen interactions in particular, are lacking. We investigated powdery mildew infection Quercus robur at continental within-city scales. At scale, we compared levels between urban rural areas different-sized cities Europe, whether plant traits, climatic variables CO2 emissions mediated effect levels. Within one large city (Stockholm, Sweden), further explored local habitat features spatial connectivity influenced during multiple years. severity was consistently higher trees than areas, with some indication that temperature this effect. Stockholm city, had no effect, while accumulation leaf litter negatively affected incidence out three years, more connected lower This study first to describe both within among cities, uncover potential mechanisms behind observed patterns each scale.

Spatial ecology across scales.

The international conference 'Models in population dynamics and ecology 2010: animal movement, dispersal and spatial ecology' took place at the University of Leicester, UK, on 1-3 September 2010, focusing on mathematical approaches to spatial population dynamics and emphasizing cross-scale issues. Exciting new developments in scaling up from individual level movement to descriptions of this mov...

Impacts of urbanization on stream habitat and fish across multiple spatial scales.

We analyzed the relation of the amount and spatial pattern of land cover with stream fish communities, in-stream habitat, and baseflow in 47 small southeastern Wisconsin, USA, watersheds encompassing a gradient of predominantly agricultural to predominantly urban land uses. The amount of connected impervious surface in the watershed was the best measure of urbanization for predicting fish densi...

Interspecific interactions between wild felids vary across scales and levels of urbanization

Ongoing global landscape change resulting from urbanization is increasingly linked to changes in species distributions and community interactions. However, relatively little is known about how urbanization influences competitive interactions among mammalian carnivores, particularly related to wild felids. We evaluated interspecific interactions between medium- and large-sized carnivores across ...

Combining Information Across Spatial Scales

Spatial and spatial-temporal processes in the physical, environmental, and biological sciences often exhibit complicated and diverse patterns across different spacetime scales. Both scientific understanding, often reflected in computer models, and observational data vary in form and content across scales. We develop and examine a Bayesian hierarchical framework by which the combination of such ...
